This book is an emotionally gripping, heart-wrenching and yet triumphant tale based on the real life of a man who lived through extraordinary events near the end of World War II in Italy. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Seriously, do yourself a favor and go grab a copy.
And I just had a wonderful interview with its author, Mark Sullivan. We discussed some of the background of how the project came together and he shared stories of Pino Lella and some of the harrowing events that didn’t make it into the book. What struck me more than anything in talking with Mark was how much gathering and writing this story affected him personally. He came across with absolute sincerity and respect regarding Pino and his life and the events that occurred. Another thing that came across was a powerful sense of gratitude that fate chose him to share this story with the world. It was a fascinating discussion and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to speak with Mark about it.
